When the Best Plan Starts With No Plan

You may remember from last week’s message that I was anticipating colorful pre-sunrise skies during our Christmas vacation. Skies I only got to see once. But those sunrises weren’t the only thing I anticipated but didn’t find—at least not right away.

On the second morning of sitting on the balcony, I wasn’t feeling the creativity I had hoped for. I wasn’t introspective or inspired. Two years earlier, during a similar trip, I’d had an insight every morning, each one turning into a message for Inner Chatter Matters. This year, nothing was flowing. Sure, I enjoyed my coffee and the soothing sound of the ocean, but my mind? Completely blank.

Instead of creativity, I felt tension. I wanted inspiration to come, but the harder I reached for it, the more elusive it became. Questions haunted my mornings: What will it be? When will I get it? What if I don’t?

Then, I remembered something powerful: the best insights over the years have come when I wasn’t chasing them. They’ve arrived when I was simply enjoying life—a hike, a bike ride, or observing everyday moments.

So, I let go. I thought, “Maybe I’ll go for a walk on the beach later if it’s not raining.” No agenda, no pressure. Just a walk.

And that’s when my creative juices started flowing. Letting go of how inspiration had to happen allowed it to happen in its own way. That’s when this series on planning—and sometimes, not planning—was born.

Yes, spontaneity can be beautiful. Life’s unexpected moments often bring the richest joy. And gratitude helps us navigate the times when our plans don’t work out. But when it is time to plan, the environment matters. Quiet, slow, unhurried spaces allow creativity to unfold.

What helps you feel most creative? What helps your mind slow down and develop ideas?

When it’s time to plan, set yourself up for success. Whether it’s a favored pen, a special coffee mug, or a walk on the beach, surround yourself with what inspires you.

And then remember—sometimes, you have to stop planning.

So your plan can come together.
