But It Used To Work So Well

When I was in graduate school, jogging was my exercise of choice. It was convenient, effective and a great option for me at the time.

Now, for a number of reasons, it's not.

Like a child outgrowing clothes and shoes, jogging no longer “fit” me.

It can be the same when you experience growth or change in any area of your life. Your old ways of doing things no longer fit. The old habits aren’t effective and continually trying to make them work only leads to confusion and a feeling of being out of sync.

A common reaction is to think, “If I just try harder” and so you continue to try. You can’t quite figure out why the things that used to work so well no longer do.

Like a child outgrowing their clothes, you’ve simply outgrown the behaviors, practices, and processes that were once your reliable options. Rather than continue to be frustrated by trying the same things again, accept that you have grown to a new place in life and search for new options.

When you want to maintain your momentum and continue to grow, you must develop new ways of doing things.

You must develop new habits.

I no longer jog, and my hips thank me for it.

I do go to an early morning group fitness class one mile from my home. The same convenient distance the jogging track used to be for me.

It’s a new beneficial habit.

For a new season of life.
